2.40 +Receiving and sending mails with multiple accounts
2.41 +

2.42 +My system is running under Linux SuSE 7.1 with firewall, masquerading
2.43 +and ISDN-dial-up connection (nothing of that will be described
2.44 +below). It was a quite lot of work to get all
2.45 +components accordingly running for doing the job they are intended to
2.46 +do.
2.47 +
2.48 +

2.49 +First of all, lets have a look at the big picture -- the real thing
2.50 +and my requirements are:
2.51 +
2.52 +

2.53 +
I have several E-Mail accounts at different providers with different
2.54 +access behaviours.
2.55 +

2.56 +
I am a subscriber of multiple mailing-list and want
2.57 +to sort this traffic out of common E-Mailing.
2.58 +

2.59 +
I want to assure only using one Mail-User-Agent
2.60 + during daily work, managing all different mail-accounts.
2.61 +

2.62 +
I want to use a MUA doing some PGP-stuff automatically.
2.63 +

2.64 +

2.65 +In short, I want to receive mails from different E-Mail providers,
2.66 +manage the mail within one application and send out mails via
2.67 +different providers. Especially the last point is under LINUX a
2.68 +big obstacle, because of being a native server system it seems to be
2.69 +no way to go outside with different faces.
2.70 +
2.71 +Solving this leads me towards the following bunch of applications
2.72 +building my working environment:
2.73 +
2.74 +

2.75 +
Mail-Transport-Agent (MTA) MasqMail
2.76 +

2.77 +
Mail-User-Agent (MUA) mutt

3.43 +First of all you have to enable SMTP-transfers via port 25
3.44 +from inside to outside (set up your firewall-rules
3.45 +accordingly). Second, you can write your E-Mails within mutt, send them

3.48 +sendmail -g -qo all
3.49 +

3.50 +And you have sent all of your mails and received all waiting mail from

6.53 +Especially the map commands need a closer look. These lines
6.54 +map local parts of the given address towards a full RFC 822 compliant
6.55 +email address. map_return_path_addresses does this for the
6.56 +passed Return address, map_h_from_addresses for the given
6.57 +From part.
6.58 +
6.59 +But, pay attention! As you can see the strange name gmx_foo in
6.60 +front of both items has never been seen until now. And in
6.61 +allowed_mail_locals you see the same item. What about this?
6.62 +
6.63 +An E-Mail will be passed towards the E-Mail provider giving a so
6.64 +called envelope. This construction envelopes the real E-Mail
6.65 +and passes important things like the address of the sender and the
6.66 +address of the receiver to the E-Mail provider. These envelope date
6.67 +will never be seen again on the receiver's site, because the MTA
6.68 +running on receiver's host will delete them. But only the envelope is
6.69 +valid for any MTA distinguishing the route towards the receiver. So,
6.70 +it must be a valid address.
6.71 +
6.72 +Per default MasqMail uses the current user-name as
6.73 +Envelope-From:. If we want to use different E-Mail accounts
6.74 +with mapping of addresses via the above shown map_return_path_addresses and
6.75 +map_h_from_addresses we have to to mutilate the envelope
6.76 +data! That could be done very easily within mutt.
