7 <p>This man page describes the format of the masqmail alias file. Its usual location is <file>/etc/aliases</file>.</p>

10 <section name="File Format">
11 <p>The alias file consists of lines of the form:</p>

13 local_part: item1, item2, ...

16 <p>Items can be surrounded by quotes '"'. If within the quotes other
17 quotes are needed for an address they can be escaped with a leading
18 backslash '\'.</p>
20 <p>A leading '\' indicates that this address shall not be further
21 expanded.</p>
23 <p>A leading pipe symbol '|' indicates that the item shall be treated
24 as a pipe command. The content of the message will then be sent to the
25 standard input of a command. The command will run under the user id
26 and group id masqmail is running as. If quotes are needed, the pipe
27 symbol must appear <i>within</i> the quotes.</p>
29 <p>Loops will be detected, the offending address will be ignored.</p>
31 <p>Aliases will be expanded at <i>delivery</i> time. This means that
32 if there is a message still in the queue and you change any alias
33 which matches one of the recipient addresses, the change will have
34 effect next time a delivery is attemped.</p>
36 <p>There is no need to restart masqmail or run any command when the
37 alias file has been changed.</p>
