garbeam@36 20 <h3>Description</h3>
garbeam@34 21 <p>
garbeam@34 22 dwm is a dynamic window manager for X11.
garbeam@34 23 </p>
garbeam@47 24 <h3>Philosophy</h3>
garbeam@47 25 <p>
garbeam@47 26 As founder and main developer of wmii I came to the conclusion that
garbeam@47 27 wmii is too clunky for my needs. I don't need so many funky features
garbeam@47 28 and all this hype about remote control through a 9P service, I only
garbeam@47 29 want to manage my windows in a simple, but dynamic way. wmii never got
garbeam@47 30 finished because I listened to users, who proposed arbitrary ideas I
garbeam@48 31 considered useful. This resulted in an extreme <a href="http://www.jwz.org/doc/cadt.html">CADT</a>
garbeam@48 32 development model, which was a mistake. Thus the philosophy of
garbeam@48 33 dwm is simply <i>to fit my needs</i> (maybe yours as well). That's it.
garbeam@47 34 </p>
garbeam@36 35 <h3>Differences to wmii</h3
garbeam@34 36 <p>
garbeam@34 37 In contrast to wmii, dwm is only a window manager, and nothing else.
garbeam@36 38 Hence, it is much smaller, faster and simpler.
garbeam@34 39 </p>
garbeam@34 40 <ul>
garbeam@36 41 <li>
garbeam@36 42 dwm has no 9P support, no status bar, no menu, no editable tagbars,
garbeam@36 43 no shell-based configuration and remote control and comes without
garbeam@36 44 any additional tools like printing the selection or warping the
garbeam@36 45 mouse.
garbeam@36 46 </li>
garbeam@36 47 <li>
garbeam@36 48 dwm is only a single binary, it's source code is intended to never
garbeam@36 49 exceed 2000 SLOC.
garbeam@36 50 </li>
garbeam@36 51 <li>
garbeam@36 52 dwm is customized through editing its source code, that makes it
garbeam@36 53 extremely fast and secure - it does not process any input data which
garbeam@36 54 hasn't been known at compile time, except window title names.
garbeam@36 55 </li>
garbeam@36 56 <li>
garbeam@36 57 dwm is based on tagging and dynamic window management (however simpler
garbeam@36 58 than wmii or larswm).
garbeam@36 59 </li>
garbeam@36 60 <li>
garbeam@36 61 dwm don't distinguishes between layers, there is no floating or
garbeam@36 62 managed layer. Wether the clients of currently selected tag are
garbeam@36 63 managed or not, you can re-arrange all clients on the fly. Popup-
garbeam@36 64 and fixed-size windows are treated unmanaged.
garbeam@36 65 </li>
garbeam@36 66 <li>
garbeam@36 67 dwm uses 1-pixel borders to provide the maximum of screen real
garbeam@36 68 estate to clients. Small titlebars are only drawn in front of unfocused
garbeam@36 69 clients.
garbeam@36 70 </li>
garbeam@36 71 <li>
garbeam@40 72 garbeam <b>does not</b> want any feedback to dwm. If you ask for support,
garbeam@46 73 feature requests, or if you report bugs, they will be <b>ignored</b>
garbeam@46 74 with a high chance. dwm is only intended to fit garbeams needs.
garbeam@46 75 However you are free to download and distribute/relicense it, with the
garbeam@36 76 conditions of the <a href="http://wmii.de/cgi-bin/hgwebdir.cgi/dwm?f=f10eb1139362;file=LICENSE;style=raw">MIT/X Consortium license</a>.

garbeam@36 83 <h3>Development</h3>
garbeam@34 84 <p>
garbeam@34 85 dwm is actively developed in parallel to wmii. You can <a href="http://wmii.de/cgi-bin/hgwebdir.cgi/dwm">browse</a> its source code repository or get a copy using <a href="http://www.selenic.com/mercurial/">Mercurial</a> with following command:

garbeam@34 87 <p>
garbeam@36 88 <code>hg clone http://wmii.de/cgi-bin/hgwebdir.cgi/dwm</code>
